A course where students explore the emotional and cultural power of type by documenting vernacular signage and transforming it into expressive letterforms. Through studio practice and fieldwork, create a display typeface rooted in place, identity, and storytelling.
Objective
To explore how type carries the essence of place, culture, and identity. Students will research, decode, and reinterpret vernacular typography and signage from a chosen location to create culturally expressive typefaces and lettering systems.
Modules
History of Indian typography and scripts
Field documentation and study: Typographic signage, street lettering,
hand-painted type
Form and identity: Shape, contrast, and texture in regional type
Emotional and spatial storytelling through letterforms
Translating place into letterforms: Color, rhythm, emotion
Type anatomy, style development, and character set design
Creating modular display type or expressive type families
Application in posters, motion, and environment graphics
Storytelling through typography: Type specimen as narrative
Outcome
A display typeface or lettering project inspired by a local cultural context, along
with a specimen booklet showcasing its evolution and use cases.
APPLICATION PROCESS
Our selective application process begins with your Statement of Purpose and portfolio showcasing your most distinctive work, followed by a creative aptitude task. Shortlisted candidates are invited to a personal online conversation to ensure alignment with the program’s vision and standards.
FEE STRUCTURE & SCHOLARSHIP
This program is designed as an intensive, high-impact learning journey. The fee is 12,000 INR per month, tailored to the duration you choose.
We believe that exceptional talent and strong commitment deserve to be nurtured. Learners demonstrating outstanding potential reflected in their Statement of Purpose, Portfolio, and Aptitude Interview performance may secure scholarships covering up to 50% of the total fee.
