A course reimagining floor-sitting furniture through cultural insight, ergonomic science, and craft innovation design mindful, health-supportive pieces rooted in Indian traditions and rituals.
Objective
To challenge the dominance of Western-style chairs by reimagining body-conscious furniture that embraces floor-sitting traditions, cultural rituals, and ergonomic science. The course encourages slow, thoughtful making while addressing health issues like MSDs (musculoskeletal disorders).
Modules
Anthropology of sitting: Postures across Indian households, crafts, and rituals
Ergonomic metrics: Spine alignment, pressure points, pelvic tilt
Material intelligence: Bamboo, cane, mud, fabric, felt, hardwood
Participatory ethnography with diverse users (children, elderly, rural women)
Design for dynamic sitting: Kneeling, squatting, cross-legged
Craft-tech integration: Joinery, CNC cuts + handmade textures
Mental wellness and space: Designing for stillness and mindfulness
Final prototype + field testing and user feedback loop
Outcomes
A prototype of furniture that supports cultural postures while promoting spinal
health and mindful use, process documentation booklet.
APPLICATION PROCESS
Our selective application process begins with your Statement of Purpose and portfolio showcasing your most distinctive work, followed by a creative aptitude task. Shortlisted candidates are invited to a personal online conversation to ensure alignment with the program’s vision and standards.
FEE STRUCTURE & SCHOLARSHIP
This program is designed as an intensive, high-impact learning journey. The fee is 12,000 INR per month, tailored to the duration you choose.
We believe that exceptional talent and strong commitment deserve to be nurtured. Learners demonstrating outstanding potential reflected in their Statement of Purpose, Portfolio, and Aptitude Interview performance may secure scholarships covering up to 50% of the total fee.
